איה הייתה בשבילי לא רק קולגה אלא גם חברה קרובה. בשנים האחרונות לחייה, איה הייתה ידועת-חולי ומיעטה לצאת מהבית. דבר זה לא מנע ממנה להיות חדה כתמיד, להמשיך לעבוד (בעיקר מהבית) ולהנהיג את המעבדה בסטטיסטיקה בטכניון, מעבדה שכה אהבה ואותה ניהלה בכישרון כה רב עד יומה האחרון. ובל נשכח, כל זאת 11 שנים לאחר הפרישה הרשמית. דווקא בימים האחרונים שלפני מותה, היינו בקשר אינטנסיבי מקצועי ביחס לניתוח נתוני יולדות בבית-חולים מסוים. מבלי שידעתי שמצבה הבריאותי הולך ומתדרדר (כיוון שהקשר היה בדואר אלקטרוני), איה הגיבה ללא דיחוי על כל מסמך ששלחתי לעיונה, ואף פקחה את עיני לדברים שהחמצתי. ולכן, מותה בא לי בהפתעה גמורה.

אני קורא את הבלוגים שנכתבו על איה, אז ב-2008 לרגל פרישתה ובימים אלה, לאחר מותה הפתאומי. כל התיאורים על יחסה של איה לאנשים – חברים, עמיתים, מונחים, תלמידים, נועצים – חוויתי גם אני. בכולם כמעט, חוזרים מושגים כמו אנושיות, אמפטיה, ערכיות , בית פתוח לצד כמובן מקצוענות, ידענות, יצירתיות, כושר להבין סוגיות ולפתור בעיות בשטחים שונים ומגוונים. רבים מלקוחותיה/נועציה חבים את קידומם לאיה.

מה אוכל להוסיף שעדיין לא נאמר? ואיני רוצה להראות כמו אותו מספיד את חברו שהמילה "אני" מופיעה בהספד בשכיחות הגבוהה ביותר. משפחתי ואני הגענו לחיפה בשנת 1976 בעקבות מינויי כמרצה לסטטיסטיקה בפקולטה להנדסת תעשייה וניהול בטכניון. לפני כן לא הכרנו חיפאים לא בטכניון ולא בחיפה העיר. מי שהקלו עלינו את הקליטה ועשו את המעבר ממרכז הארץ לחיפה ליותר נוח, היו איה ואלישע. הם פתחו את ביתם ואת ליבם בפנינו ושיתפו אותנו בעצות טובות על סמך ניסיונם. בהמשך, נעשינו חברים קרובים וחיינו נגעו בחייהם של איה ואלישע ביותר מפן אחד. למשל, ארי, בנם הבכור היה מדריך נערץ בצופים של בתי שהם. ואותה שהם למדה סטטיסטיקה אצל איה. בני צחי למד פיסיקה אצל אלישע. שניהם זוכרים בהערצה את מוריהם. איה נעשתה חברה קרובה של עדנה רעייתי, ואף למדה ממנה ואימצה את אפיית אותה עוגת-פירות מפורסמת של איה.

את ההרצאות הראשונות במבוא לסטטיסטיקה בניתי על סמך הרשימות והשקפים של איה. כפי שצוין על-ידי רבים, איה זכתה בתואר "מרצה מצטיין" שנה אחר שנה. לצערי, מעולם לא זכיתי בתואר הנ"ל על אף השימוש ברשימותיה. לימים, בשנת 1991, בעקבות עבודתנו המשותפת, כתבנו יחד ספר "מבוא לסטטיסטיקה" שליווה ומלווה את הקורס בשם זה בטכניון עד עצם היום הזה. במשך השנים, איה הקדישה את זמנה, מירצה ואת כישרונותיה לפיתוח קורסים ללא סטטיסטיקאים, בעיקר למדעי ההתנהגות (ובנפרד) למנהל עסקים והייתה מרצה מבוקשת בשטחים אלה. כל זה במקביל להובלת המעבדה בסטטיסטיקה. נושאי המחקר שלה, שנבעו ברובם מאותה פעילות – קשריה עם חוקרים ממדעי ההתנהגות ועם נועצים ממדעי החיים והרפואה – היו שונים מנושאי המחקר שלי (בעיקר מחקר ערכי-קיצון). לפיכך, אין לי פירסומים עם איה (למעט אחד משנת 1996). אך היינו משוחחים ומתייעצים רבות בנושאים של תיאוריה סטטיסטית ויישומיה.
על אף ממדיה (הגופניים) הצנועים, לאיה הייתה נוכחות בולטת בכל מפגש חברתי. הייתה לה דעה מקורית משלה בכל עניין ולא התביישה להביע אותה. איה הייתה מסוג האנשים שנהנו יותר מלתת מאשר לקחת.
איבדתי חברה יקרה ונדירה.

The phrase Aya Z"L (of blessed memory) is hard for me to comprehend.

Aya was not only a colleague but also a close friend. In the last years of her life, Aya was ill and rarely left the house. This did not prevent her from being as sharp as ever, to continue working (mainly from home) and to lead the Statistics Laboratory at the Technion, a lab she loved so much and managed with such talent until her last day. And let's not forget, all this is 11 years after her official retirement. In the last days before her death, we were actually intensively working together on an analysis of maternity data in a particular hospital. Without knowing that her health was deteriorating (because the connection was by e-mail), Aya responded promptly to every document I sent to her, and even opened my eyes to what I had missed. So her death came as a complete surprise.

I read the blogs written about Aya, back then in 2008 on the occasion of her retirement and these days, after her sudden death. All the descriptions of Aya's attitude towards others -- friends, colleagues, advisees, students, peers -- I experienced too. Almost all of them return to concepts such as humanity, empathy, values, open house alongside professionalism, knowledge, creativity, the ability to understand issues and solve problems in different areas. Many of her lab customers and advisees owe their promotions to Aya.

What can I add that has not yet been said? I do not want "I" to be the highest frequency word in my eulogy. My family and I arrived in Haifa in 1976 following my appointment as a lecturer in statistics at the Faculty of Industrial Engineering and Management at the Technion. Before that, we did not know anyone at the Technion or in Haifa. The ones who eased our move to Haifa were Aya and Elisha. They opened their home and hearts to us and shared with us their best advice based on their experience. Later on, we became close friends and our lives touched the lives of Aya and Elisha in more than one way. For example, Ari, their eldest son was a revered scouts guide to my own daughter Shoham. And Shoham later studied statistics in Aya's courses. My son Tzachi studied physics in Elisha's course. They both reverently remember their teachers. Aya became a close friend of my wife Edna, and Edna even learned and adopted Aya's famous fruit cake recipe.

I designed the first lectures in the Introduction to Statistics course based on Aya's notes and slides. As noted by many, Aya won the title of "Outstanding Lecturer" year after year. Later, in 1991, as a result of our joint work, we co-authored a textbook entitled "Introduction to Statistics" that is the core textbook for the Introduction to Statistics course at the Technion to this day. Over the years, Aya invested her time, energy, and talent to develop courses in statistics for non-statisticians, especially for social scientists and separately for management and business administration. She was a sought-after lecturer in these areas, on top of leading the Statistics Laboratory. Aya's research topics are different from my own (my research is on extreme values), so we do not have joint publications except for a 1996 paper. However, we had many discussions and consulted each other on various topics of statistical theory and its applications.

Despite her small body, Aya had a prominent presence at every social gathering. She had her own original opinion on everything and was not ashamed to express it. Aya was the kind of person who enjoyed giving more than taking.
I lost a precious and rare friend.
