רף ושמו איה

הזדמנות יקרה לכתוב על איה ואליה, כדי לומר לה מה שמזמן אצור בליבנו. נפלא שהפרישה ממסלול פורמאלי של תעסוקה ממציאה לנו אפשרות לומר לה מה שאיננו חושפים בשיח רגיל בין חברים. מאחר ומדובר בנקודת זמן הקשורה לחיים מקצועיים, נתמקד בכך ולא נפליג למחוזות המופלאים של איה החברה, ואיה הלוחמת במכאובי בריאותה, ואיה הרעיה ואשת המשפחה.
איה מהווה רף, שבעצם הגדרתו מציב אתגר שניתן לחתור אליו, אך רק שיאנים של ממש עשויים לעבור אותו. להלן כמה דוגמאות:
· מיהו סטטיסטיקאי. הגדרה רחבה, לפעמים רחבה מידי, הכוללת לעיתים נושאים שהזיקה ביניהם לסטטיסטיקה קלושה. איה ממצה את השילוב הנדיר של חוקרת המתחברת אל בעיית שטח אמיתית, מאתרת או ממציאה את המודל התיאורטי העשוי להסביר את התופעה, מנתחת את הנתונים, מאוששת את המודל, מסיקה מסקנות הניתנות להבנת משתמש הקצה, מפרסמת את הממצא בעיתונות מקצועית וממשיכה לחקור את הבעיה בשיתוף דור צעיר של חוקרים. הטיפול הטוטאלי הזה מאד נדיר ומעטים הסטטיסטיקאים המתקרבים אל הרף הזה.
· תקשורת אינטרדיסיפלינרית. היכולת לתקשר מקצועית עם חוקר בכל שטח שבו מצויים נתונים. תקשורת שיש בה רכיב של למידת נושא חדש, ניתוח מדעי של תופעה ושיתוף עם אותו חוקר. תקשורת אמיתית מהסוג שאיה מציעה, שיש בה הרמוניה נדירה, מבטיחה הבנה עמוקה של התופעה מצידה, והפנמת התוצאות על ידי החוקר העומד מולה.
· הנחיה והאיזון בין המקצועי והאישי. על המסירות, הקפדנות, ההשראה, התמיכה והקשר האישי העמוק שנוצר בינה לבין תלמידי המחקר, יעידו עשרות מאלה שהרביצה בהם תורה. לא הייתה לי את הזכות להימנות עם תלמידי המחקר שלה. משיחות עם אלו שזכו, למדתי מה גדולה הזכות.
· סמינרים מקצועיים. איני מכיר איש המכיר טוב מאיה את אמנות בניית סמינר המחקר באופן המרתק את המאזין במשך שעה שלימה, סמינר אחרי סמינר. הבנייה הנכונה, חוש התזמון, יצירת המוטיבאציה, האיזון בין התוכן התיאורטי והיישום המעשי והחן של איה...רף נדיר.
· מרצה מצטיינת. ההקפדה על הכנת הרצאה, פשוטה כשיעור מבוא ומורכבת כשיעור מתקדם, זיכתה אותה, כמדומני, שנה אחרי שנה בתואר מרצה מצטיינת. הסטטיסטיקה מדברת בעד עצמה...
· היכולת להפגין כבוד עצמי נוכח עלבון צורב. בחוגים מקצועיים ובקרב סטטיסטיקאים מהשורה הראשונה בעולם, אי הענקת דרגת פרופ' מן המניין לאיה נחשבה לחוסר צדק הזועק מהחדרים הסגורים שבהם זכותה המוצדקת נשללה. האופן שבו איה כבשה את כאבה והפגינה כבוד עצמי שהייתה בו אצילות נפש, רק העיד על אישיותה הנדירה. אדם ניבחן בשעת משבר ובעת כאב. איה עברה את המבחן בצורה המעוררת השתאות.

איה יקרה. אין לנו ספק שהיצירה המקצועית שלך תימשך שנים רבות. מי שהגדיר את הרף יתמיד ויחזיק בו. נמשיך לעקוב בהערצה.

Inspiration

I must admit, that writing on Aya's retirement is a bit strange, as I can't imagine her retiring from any of her activities.

I was fortunate to be Aya's first Ph.D. student, after being her teaching assistant in various courses for some years. In those years and those forthcoming, Aya became my official mentor and my unofficial second Mom.
I was (and still) deeply inspired by her knowledge in Statistics and the way she uses it in applying clear and neat solutions to complex real-world problems. Even nowadays, when I struggle with some statistical problem, I often ask myself, how will Aya tackle it? Will my solution or presentation comply with her way of thinking and unwritten standards?

As I was attendant in most of her courses, I was fascinated by the way Aya inspired her young students – mission, which is sometimes impossible nowadays, especially in teaching introductory Statistics. Aya's serious attitude towards teaching and warm concern for her students awarded her for excellence by her own students, year by year. As her assistant, I recall myself being very proud of her success.

Finally, I must mention Aya's baking specialty of which I miss a lot: the amazing fruit cake, which became a worldwide trademark...

One of a kind

Aya and I first met when I came to her office asking for guidance in a statistical matter related to my thesis research. I heard so much about her -- a well known top statistician with many years of experience in research, practice and teaching -- I expected someone bigger. I was so surprised to see this tiny elegant lady with a friendly face behind the disproportionally large desk. But as we started talking I realized just how “big” she really is. I was amazed by her ability to learn any problem so quickly, simplify even the most complicated elements and suggest potential solutions based on her enormous professional experience, and all in such an elegant and diplomatic manner. Today, more than four years later, I can say that this was just the tip of the iceberg. As I got to know Aya better, as a member of the statistical lab and as her TA, I realized just how unique she is. As the head of the statistics lab, with her ability to lead a team with diverse knowledge and abilities, strengthen the qualities of each one of us and manage projects that meet the needs of so many satisfied customers; As a teacher, who revealed the applicable side of statistics to many generations of students; As a friend, who is always willing to give a hand and always seems to find the right words to say and the right thing to do to make things better; And, as a mentor, who guided me based on her life time experience. As I opened the door to your office four years ago, I didn’t realize it was going to have such an impact on my life.

Dear Aya,
Your official retirement from the Technion is a good time to write to you a few lines. You are not really retiring, having declared that you plan to continue to lead the Statistical Laboratory, your favorite working place. And even without your declaration, it was clear right from the beginning, that these are your intentions. Because you are full of desire, knowledge and the will to continue to work for the advancement of the community, the environment and science in general. Your devotion is as strong now as it was 32 years ago, when we first met you.

We first met 32 years ago after we moved to Haifa, a strange city for us. You welcomed us with worm hearts, encouragements and clever advices and with your help, we felt quickly at home.

Your open house, the aesthetics, the good taste, the pleasant smell, the generous hospitality, the informal atmosphere -- all made every visit a remarkable experience. Very soon our friendship developed and strengthened to become most significant in our life.

Today, after more than 3 decades, it seems that things have not changed. The energy, the desire to be involved, the need to give and to care about the needy, exist at the same level. May be in a different form, due to age and physical conditions.

Aya and Elisha, we love you and feel lucky to be included among your fiends. Let's hope that you will both continue to be healthy, creative and contribute to society as you did all your life. Enjoy your children, grandchildren, family and friends. We hope to continue to be part of your life for many years to come.

למעגל הגמלאים, מהווה עילה לכתיבת שורות אלה.
הרי אינך פורשת באמת. כבר הצהרת שאת נשארת
במעבדה, מקום עבודתך האהוב והמושקע וגם אם
לא היית מצהירה, הרי היה ברור שכך יהיה, כי את
מלאת מרץ ידע ונכונות לתרום, לפחות כמו שהיית
כשרק פגשתי אותך בשנת 1976.
איה ואלישע יקרים, נפגשנו לפני שלושים ושתיים
שנים. קיבלתם פנינו בחום, בעידוד ובעצה טובה.
הייתם מנותני הטון שבין חברינו ובמהירות הרגשנו
כמו בבית. ביתכם הפתוח, האסטטי, הדיף תמיד ריח
של קבלה ונתינה והאירוח התדיר כל-כך היה מלא חן
וטעם טוב, תרתי משמע. מהר מאוד התחזקה ידידותינו
והפכתם לאחד הזוגות המשמעותיים ביותר בחיינו.
היום, לאחר יותר משלושה עשורים, נראה לי שדברים
לא השתנו. המרץ, הרצון להיות מעורבים, הצורך להעניק
והדאגה לרגשות הזולת, קיימים באותה עוצמה, אך בדרכים שונות, שמתאימות יותר לגיל ולמצב הגופני.
איה ואלישע, אנחנו אוהבים אתכם ומרגישים בני מזל
להימנות על קהל חבריכם.

Mentor

As a Ph.D. student, I learned a lot from Aya. I would like to focus
specifically on two aspects that I think are unique to Aya as a mentor.
The first one is the importance of broad statistical education.
Even if you choose to specialize in a narrow statistical area, you may benefit
from knowing even just a little about other areas.

The other aspect that often reminds me of Aya is the importance of being able
to make clear and organized presentations. When I go to a conference,
I often find the presentation quality of many talks quite poor, even
if the content is good. When I see a bad speaker, I think this person
was not fortunate to have an advisor like Aya. As a Ph.D student, Aya
encouraged me to give talks at international conferences.
Before each conference, I would practice my talk, including in front of Aya,
who always had good advice to improve the quality of the presentation.

A memeber of Aya's fan club

I first met Aya when I did my M.Sc in statistics at the Technion. Unfortunately (for me) she taught me only 2 courses.
The first time I walked into her classroom I froze. Literally! I froze to death. It was the middle of the summer, 40 degrees in the shade and minus 10 in the classroom. I’m sure all of Aya’s students and colleagues know what I’m talking about. Turns out Aya has a long term relationship with the very-very-cool side of the air-condition system…
The next lesson, I was prepared! Believe it or not, I took my army coat (yes, yes, in the middle of the s-u-m-m-e-r ) and attended the lesson. Wow – I’ve struck gold this time. Aya was so clear, so fluent and so enthusiastic about teaching she really made everything seem easy… and interesting – from that day on, I am a proud member of Aya’s fan club.
When I gave my thesis presentation, I was soooo stressed. All the professors and colleagues attended and I wasn’t sure I’d be able to finish the first slide. And then came Aya , holding her famous fruit cake.
Now.. I wasn’t her student, I was never her teaching assistant, but there she was – thinking of me. She said she thought I’d be just a tiny bit pressured and that a cake always helps. Well, it sure did!
So now the queen of ice with the warmest of hearts is retiring. I wish her all the best, really.
And, Aya, I’m just adding a personal note here – You taught me statistics (and did it so well) but you’ve also taught me to become a “mentch” and I believe this is even more important that statistics :) ,

Aya is retiring!!!

How can that be? I think of her as the young visitor to Bell Labs with whom I enjoyed working on several interesting problems, she was the one who nagged me to write our stuff up so it could be published. Still, I have good news for her. Retitrement is not the end. I "retired" in 2000 but since then have been having just as much fun. There are always good problems to work on. I envy the many students she has inspired. Her enthusiam and energy are legendary.
