Our beloved Aya passed away /

Our beloved Aya passed away on Feb 20, 2019. The news has saddened and shocked her family, friends and many of her colleagues, past students, mentees, advisees at the Technion statistics lab, and so many more with whom Aya had wonderful life-long relationships.
This blog was created in 2008 to commemorate Aya's retirement from the Technion. She was delighted to read the lovely posts contributed by so many of those whose lives she touched.
In this sad moment of Aya's passing away, we decided to re-open the blog for posts, serving as a virtual memorial. We invite everyone to "hear" about Aya's life and wonderful contributions, and to share your stories.

From Ann Saunders

I’ve had the privilege of knowing Aya since 1964 when she and Elisha were at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. For the next 55 years we kept in touch by the old-fashioned “air mail” letters, and then email, with occasional in-person visits in Israel or Baltimore.

Even though Aya had a very prestigious and demanding job, in our correspondence, she was down-to-earth and always wanted details of what my family and I were doing. In writing about her family, it was clear that she was very proud of each and every one of them and loved them very much. As I wrote to Aya two days before her death, in addition to being an brilliant academic, she was also an outstanding wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. I pictured her surrounded by love.

Despite her fragile health, Aya was such a strong person in her work and as the matriarch of her wonderful family. I always admired her strength of mind and spirit even though her strength of body lagged.

She was able to balance family life and friendships with her very demanding work. Needless to say, she touched the lives of many, including ours. Not only was Aya a remarkable woman, but she and
Elisha made an incredible team.

I was devastated by Aya’s last letter, and at the same time so admiring of how strong she was to recognize and be content that she was on her last days, which she wanted to spend at home.

I will truly miss her.
