Our beloved Aya passed away /

Our beloved Aya passed away on Feb 20, 2019. The news has saddened and shocked her family, friends and many of her colleagues, past students, mentees, advisees at the Technion statistics lab, and so many more with whom Aya had wonderful life-long relationships.
This blog was created in 2008 to commemorate Aya's retirement from the Technion. She was delighted to read the lovely posts contributed by so many of those whose lives she touched.
In this sad moment of Aya's passing away, we decided to re-open the blog for posts, serving as a virtual memorial. We invite everyone to "hear" about Aya's life and wonderful contributions, and to share your stories.

From Peter Bamberger

Arriving to the Technion as a young immigrant social scientist in the early 1990’s, I found the place rather intimidating. And rightfully so, as the Technion was in many ways one big school of applied mathematics. As a social scientist, I was a bit like a fish out of water.  But it didn’t take long before Aya came to the rescue. Aya was different from every other “quant” that I had ever met.  She was neither intimidating nor dismissive. What I studied was actually of interest to her, and she wanted to help me study it better. Moreover, she wanted me to understand what I was doing methodologically.

Aya had a magical way of teaching statistics.  It was painless. In fact, it was kinda fun. And most of all, it was readily comprehensible, even to those “quantitatively challenged” folks like me.  Throughout high school, I found every excuse to avoid anything quantitative.  I chose my college on the basis that I wouldn’t have to take a math course.  But after working on my first study with Aya, my fear was replaced with curiosity, which led to exploration, and eventually, perhaps a bit of mastery.

But Aya became far more than my statistics teacher and mentor. As she was with so many people, she became my adopted Mom, inviting me over to her place to sample her baking, and arranging a medical internship for my new immigrant wife in the pediatrics department at Bnai Zion Medical Center (which, 25 years later, is the department my wife still calls home).

Aya’s retirement and my departure from the Technion changed nothing.  We continued to work together. And my wife and I continued to enjoy our periodic evening get-togethers with her and Elisha.

I’m going to miss those evening get-togethers, not to mention Aya’s delicious baking, the amazing stories of her childhood in Israel’s early years, and of course the opportunity to learn from her.  I always knew that Aya shaped my career, but only now that she’s gone am I realizing how much she actually shaped me.  I miss her dearly.

From Ori Rosen

Aya was my PhD advisor. Even though it has been more than 22 years since I received my PhD, Aya and I kept in touch all this time mainly through email but also met once a year at her home while I was on winter break. These meetings would include other former students and colleagues, and Aya's legendary baked goods would be served. She was always curious to hear about my research, and would also tell me about her professional activities and family news.

When I was her student, Aya always encouraged me to broaden my statistical knowledge beyond my immediate interests. From an early stage, she encouraged me to attend conferences, and submit papers for publication. One of the many things I learned from her was to prepare a talk; before going to a conference, I would practice my talk in front of her, and she would critique it. I have adopted this practice and do it with my own students.

Around the time I was finishing my PhD, Aya suggested that I attend a short course on Bayesian computational methods at the Hebrew University that was given by Professor Martin Tanner of Northwestern University. Thus, she is partly to "blame" for my ensuing postdoc at Northwestern and for the fact that my research took a Bayesian turn.

I will miss our email correspondence and the annual meetings.

From Ishay Weissman

The phrase Aya Z"L (of blessed memory) is hard for me to comprehend.

Aya was not only a colleague but also a close friend. In the last years of her life, Aya was ill and rarely left the house. This did not prevent her from being as sharp as ever, to continue working (mainly from home) and to lead the Statistics Laboratory at the Technion, a lab she loved so much and managed with such talent until her last day. And let's not forget, all this is 11 years after her official retirement. In the last days before her death, we were actually intensively working together on an analysis of maternity data in a particular hospital. Without knowing that her health was deteriorating (because the connection was by e-mail), Aya responded promptly to every document I sent to her, and even opened my eyes to what I had missed. So her death came as a complete surprise.

I read the blogs written about Aya, back then in 2008 on the occasion of her retirement and these days, after her sudden death. All the descriptions of Aya's attitude towards others -- friends, colleagues, advisees, students, peers -- I experienced too. Almost all of them return to concepts such as humanity, empathy, values, open house alongside professionalism, knowledge, creativity, the ability to understand issues and solve problems in different areas. Many of her lab customers and advisees owe their promotions to Aya.

What can I add that has not yet been said? I do not want "I" to be the highest frequency word in my eulogy. My family and I arrived in Haifa in 1976 following my appointment as a lecturer in statistics at the Faculty of Industrial Engineering and Management at the Technion. Before that, we did not know anyone at the Technion or in Haifa. The ones who eased our move to Haifa were Aya and Elisha. They opened their home and hearts to us and shared with us their best advice based on their experience. Later on, we became close friends and our lives touched the lives of Aya and Elisha in more than one way. For example, Ari, their eldest son was a revered scouts guide to my own daughter Shoham. And Shoham later studied statistics in Aya's courses. My son Tzachi studied physics in Elisha's course. They both reverently remember their teachers. Aya became a close friend of my wife Edna, and Edna even learned and adopted Aya's famous fruit cake recipe.

I designed the first lectures in the Introduction to Statistics course based on Aya's notes and slides. As noted by many, Aya won the title of "Outstanding Lecturer" year after year. Later, in 1991, as a result of our joint work, we co-authored a textbook entitled "Introduction to Statistics" that is the core textbook for the Introduction to Statistics course at the Technion to this day. Over the years, Aya invested her time, energy, and talent to develop courses in statistics for non-statisticians, especially for social scientists and separately for management and business administration. She was a sought-after lecturer in these areas, on top of leading the Statistics Laboratory. Aya's research topics are different from my own (my research is on extreme values), so we do not have joint publications except for a 1996 paper. However, we had many discussions and consulted each other on various topics of statistical theory and its applications.

Despite her small body, Aya had a prominent presence at every social gathering. She had her own original opinion on everything and was not ashamed to express it. Aya was the kind of person who enjoyed giving more than taking.
I lost a precious and rare friend.

From Ron Kenett

Aya was the sixth president of the Israel Statistical Association. She paved the way for the application of Statistics in Israel and beyond. Her work on mediation effect in social science is only one such example. I would like however to contribute a few words on Aya as a personality with significant influence and impact on science and scientists, and colleagues. Statistics is a weird discipline. Its mathematical foundations become impactful only with statistical thinking and reasoning. Aya was a role model in that. Her unique teaching ability provided a glimpse at what outstanding statisticians do. She was uniquely appreciated by the people she worked with, both statisticians and non statisticians. Her insightful comments always added light and insights. Her encouragements and concern for others stood out as coming from a unique human being.

Her passing away came as a shock. It will take time to integrate the work and contributions of Aya Cohen to Statistics.

She will be missed by many people.
